In 1969 "The Market Place" opened in Rock Sound as the first properly planned and designed commercial shopping centre on the island of Eleuthera. The centre was conceived by the late Juan Trippe, pioneer of Pan American Airlines.

It quickly became successful with its offer of a fine, well-stocked Supermarket, a large Hardware Store, Automotive Parts Store, a Drug Store, all in one convenient location, with an international clearing Bank in close proximity.

The centre was purchased by the late T. Albert Sands and his wife Claudia in 1976, and is still owned and managed by the Sands family, who, to mark its 30th Anniversary, and to take advantage of the economic upswing currently happening on Eleuthera, have launched this further exciting commercial development phase. This consists of a further 24 newly built commercial units, designed in the colonial style of the locality, but constructed of the very best modern techniques. These will be placed in landscaped garden areas around the original Market Centre which will also undergo extensive remodeling of its facade and amenities.

The new retail and commercial units will range in size from 600 to 2,500 sq.ft. and be offered to high class jewelers, retailers of branded fashion accessories, gift stores, furnishing outlets, restaurants and a patisserie/delicatessen.

There will also be spaces set aside for a second bank, lawyers, doctors, dentists, accountants, beauty salons, together with 16 residential apartments of 1 and 2 bedrooms, above some of the units.

This exciting new retail initiative reflects the confidence shown in tourism and the construction of new vacation homes on Eleuthera. It also constitutes a unique and profitable opportunity, for new tenants to share in the stylishly elegant modernization and expansion of a landmark in the development of Eleuthera.
